Release XXIX // Chapters 71 & 72

Release XXIX is here!

Release XXIX contains two chapters, three music tracks, three CGs, and finally updated ranks for the past three rounds of the contest.

Well, I think this is the first time I've been two days late with a Release... there was a lot of stuff to make for this Release, and I was up until 1 AM last night before deciding to save it for the morning. Since these two chapters are very important, I wanted to make sure everything was reasonably polished and that the mysteries worked.

Speaking of, this is the first time since Chapter 18 and 19 where there have been two mysteries in a row. Now you probably get what I meant when I said there would be a LOT of mysteries coming — you guessed it, this trend will continue for the next several chapters, so be prepared!

I hope it will make up for skipping three mysteries last Stage, which wasn't my original plan, but they just got in the way of telling the story.

This week I'm changing up the way I package the game — hopefully it won't screw with anyone's saves or impede downloading the game. Downloading it from the itch app should work just fine.

I'm changing it from having separate packages for each platform to one package with all the platforms included — this will cut down on upload/download time significantly, since it will mean it will be able to simply ignore all the old files and upload just the new ones.

I've meant to change this for a while, let me know if there are any problems.

Until next time.

Oh, oh - a Methods update to obscure the nightmare drenched hellscape that is the real world. My method may very well be retreating to an allegorical cave or something, aha, aha, ha...

I gotta say, though, if this is the result of adjusting your schedule a bit, entirely worth it!

TWO mysteries, both of which are multi-step puzzlers (Everreaves' one, especially)! Some really interesting revelations, and FANTASTIC dialogue. Noman making it and being Noman! Seeing 795 again! (Missed ya, pal!) The Mansion of Legends (it's very symmmetrical. I'm glad Conver got a chance to use it)! Ens whole chapter being relatable... So very... Relatable...

Oh, and a mystery I nailed in one because, aha, I've got Carambola seeds stratifying in the fridge right now! Don't underestimate the power of gardeners! (Or do. Well, at least aeroponics might continue into the future...)

Really, the lineup of detectives for this section feels awesome. I was so pleased Everreave got a moment in the spotlight, such a fun method and a great method (heh) of implementation. It's hard enough in the latter bits to be real fun if you don't cheese it, and you could just bruteforce it if the mystery sections aren't your jam. (Or if you wanna see where the dialogue goes, like me.)

But seriously, seeing Red July, 795, Mackle, Ether... Selete, ah, Selete? Who's Sele - oh woah oh geeze, hey, LockedOn, uh, the other detectives are okay right buddy pal uh

(Don't think I missed that stealth bio, either! Bahaha!)

And that's without going into the tech stuff, that little flyover killed me. Remind me of some real classic adventure/FMV games, and really felt appropriate for a Mansion. And I mean, you have to have a Mansion, right? I'm even capitalising it!

Just so you know, I'm very much looking forward to the chapters to come.

I can give some feedback about the new packaging, assuming the new bundle feature is the joint compile? It seems to work well (Win7) here. Uh, want me to dig out my linux box and see if it plays nice on Mint?

But it should do what you said it'll do. Naturally, if there are any issues, I can butt in with questionably useful advice, too! Gahahahaha!

Finally. Dunno if I can choose just one track for this update, but, if I /had/ to it'd be Ens investigates. It really hits the questionable smoothie of a lethal atmosphere with a pinprick of danger and a splash of style.

Edit, oh, one thing; the itch launcher now has a thumb/smiley emoji ratio thing, both at or near 50%. I thought they might be ratings-related, but the rating on-site is much better than that? Further, I see no option to rate them on my end. I guess they're an itch thing, but do you have any clue what they are?

Hmm, nope, I haven't heard about any new itch.io ratings feature. Doesn't show up for me in the app... maybe you've been selected for some special feature rollout?

Glad to hear the new packaging works, I tested it myself and everything seems to be OK, so, whew.

Thanks! Glad to hear the flyover was worth it — that was one of the reasons the Release was late. It took like a day and a half to render it. :( Of course, you gotta have a Mansion!
